Self-care is any kind of restorative action or behavior you take on for yourself. It does not have to be grand, or expensive, or an all-day thing. Sure, a spa day or “retail therapy” can make you feel good, but true self-care is not so extravagant.
When you break it down, it is possible to do some kind of self-care every day. Can you find ten minutes here and ten minutes there? I challenge you to take thirty minutes every day and practice self-care. There are three main areas to practice. 1. Ten minutes of silence. This can be prayer, or meditation, or just sitting in your favorite spot and listening to….nothing. 2. Ten minutes of nature. Sit in your garden, or on your porch, and engage your five senses in nature. What do you hear? What do you see? What do you smell? Is there a “taste” in the air? What textures can you feel beneath your feet or between your fingers? Be in the present moment. 3. Ten minutes of movement. Take a walk. Do yoga. Play fetch with your dog. Just move.
You may be surprised how these three simple things, practiced ten minutes every day, can improve your life.
